Planning your EICR

Keeping your business running is a key consideration when arranging a commercial EICR. An electrical installation condition report (EICR) does not automatically mean closing the premises. Understanding how the premises are used, who relies on them and what needs to stay operational helps us plan the inspection properly.

At Chase Farm Electrical, we take time to meet with you or your site representatives and discuss your individual requirements. We look at access, essential equipment and the implications of any power interruptions, then agree the practical arrangements before testing begins. That preparation helps us organise the work efficiently and keep you informed about what to expect.

This article explains when an EICR may affect normal operations, what to prepare beforehand and how we plan the inspection with you to minimise avoidable disruption.

For inspections in Winchester, Southampton and across Hampshire, see our commercial EICR service.

How we plan testing to minimise disruption

Our experience with occupied commercial premises helps us anticipate the practical issues that can interrupt your business. We look at how the building is supplied, what each area is used for and which equipment needs particular consideration. Establishing that information early helps us organise the inspection efficiently and reduce avoidable delays.

An EICR involves inspecting and testing the fixed electrical installation, often called fixed wire testing. Some tests require circuits to be safely isolated, so their electrical supply has to be switched off.

Whether normal activities can continue depends on which equipment and areas are affected. Where the installation allows, we can plan testing in separate areas and coordinate interruptions with your site’s activities. We then agree who needs to be involved and how any necessary power interruptions will be managed.

Where appropriate, we can provide a programme of works tailored to the job, so everyone involved understands how the inspection will be organised.

Commercial EICRs for different premises

Our commercial EICR service covers a broad range of premises, including:

  • Nursing home and care home EICRs.
  • Pub EICRs.
  • Hotel EICRs.
  • Office and retail EICRs.

Each inspection is planned around the building’s use, its occupants and its operational requirements.

  • Warehouse and industrial EICRs.
  • School and college EICRs.
  • Church EICRs.
  • Agricultural EICRs.

Preparing for your commercial EICR

A little preparation helps us make the best use of our time on site and reduce avoidable delays. Before the inspection, the following information is useful:

Working hours

Let us know your working hours and busy periods so we can discuss suitable times for testing.

Essential equipment

Tell us about essential equipment and systems, including anything that needs a planned shutdown or specialist involvement.

Access arrangements

Tell us about access arrangements and a site contact, including keys, restricted areas and other occupiers who need to be involved.

Previous records

Share previous electrical reports and records, such as an earlier EICR, circuit schedules and certificates for subsequent work.

Known faults or alterations

Mention known faults or alterations, including recurring tripping, recent changes and any shared supplies you are aware of.

We will talk through these details with you. If information or records are missing, let us know so we can take that into account when planning the visit.

Commercial EICR planning at a Winchester pub

For a commercial EICR at a Winchester pub, we arranged the inspection around the business’s working hours. With several supplies serving the commercial and domestic areas, we carefully traced the circuits to establish which parts of the building they served.
